waiting for healing

I am taking time at the computer instead of getting ready for work. I am home alone which is unusual. The girl is with her mama and the other maw maw until this afternoon and my son is in an out of town hospital. His dad is with him right now. We have been taking turns staying with him during his recuperation. He has had a huge surgery, the second and I hope last one necessary for testicular cancer. He was just diagnosed and had his first surgery on May 1st. From that surgery we found some spread into the blood vessels of the testicle and that the cancer was an aggressive nasty sort. THe plan then was to take out the lymph nodes in the trunk of the body to look for spread. That is no easy task and he is now recovering from that surgery. Because men have an extra rib on the right side, the doctors can not always get as high up in the body as they want on that side, to get all the nodes from around the kidney, so they end up having to remove that rib to complete the work. So he has this long incision that goes from the pubis up to the sternum and takes a right turn and goes over the rib cage toward the back. Ouch. The muscles that are cut through are the ones that are used when you breath and when you move the trunk. So he is having a murderous time getting the pain under control. The wound is healing well. He is moving around well. He has even had a shower with his Dad's help. It is terrible to see him in pain like that. But we encourage him to move about, to relax, to take the pain meds (no problem there) on time - the best nurse he had kept the meds coming every two hours to keep the pain down to a manageable level. The pathology report has come back, not as bad as it could be, only one positive node out of at least 20 that were taken, I am not sure of the number taken. So he will have chemo. He has already seen the oncologist and the treatments will be scheduled pretty soon, he has to heal from this surgery, then get started. He is the King of Second Chances and this is a highly treatable and curable cancer so this is just part of the plan to get to that cure. Keep your fingers crossed.
